Summer in Australia is the perfect time to try new outdoor activities (and old favourites!). If you’re like us and always in search of a new adventure, here are some great outdoor activities you could try out this summer.
We’ve included many of the classics that have been enjoyed by Aussies for generations. But also a few activities that have risen in popularity recently and you may not have tried.
1. Fishing
If you haven’t been fishing before, or it’s something that you haven’t done in a long time, you’ll definitely need to brush up on the basics, but once you catch your first fish, you’ll probably be hooked.
Fishing is a great calming activity that can allow you to enjoy nature as well as see some breathtaking views around Australia. If you’re a real fishing enthusiast, don’t limit yourself to your own backyard. If you’re looking for a new adventure this Summer, consider travelling to other parts of the country to visit some of these top fishing destinations.
Fishing also offers a brilliant chance to bring your family together and maybe even teach the kids a new skill too.
2. Hiking
If you’re looking for a way to get back in shape after the Christmas period, hiking could be the answer! With trails available for all levels of skill and ability, hiking is a very inclusive activity that’s also great for your health and fitness.

4. 4WDing
Australia is the perfect place to test your mettle when it comes to off-roading on a range of tricky terrains – and in a way you never could in an ordinary car!

5. Jet skiing

6. Boating
It’s hard to beat spending a warm day out on the water in a boat. Boating is a wonderful way to bond with your friends or family while experiencing some of the nation’s best landscapes from a different perspective. 7. Stand-up paddle boarding
Stand-up paddle boarding is one Summer activity that’s really taken off in recent years. Whether you are looking for a new hobby or just a bit of fun with the family, stand-up paddle boarding is worth a look.
It can be tricky to find your balance when you first start. But even if you end up in the water a few times, you’ll definitely create some magical memories and leave the water laughing. If you can’t stay standing upright, you can try kneeling instead.

8. Rock climbing

Rock climbing is a thrilling activity and a brilliant way to push yourself out of your comfort zone. If you are new to rock climbing, there are plenty of indoor climbing walls and centres where you can try out the activity with instructors and experienced climbers around to help you.
If you really want to develop your rock climbing skills you could consider taking a class. And if you’re after something more casual, there are also lots of indoor centres where you can try out bouldering and lower-risk activities before you move to higher walls.
9. Mountain biking
This is an activity that may feel like a challenge in physical terms but can be great fun and hugely rewarding. If you want to go on a family ride with the kids, be sure to pick a more beginner-friendly trail. Something shorter or less intense may be better suited to youngsters or beginners.
But if you really want a thrilling experience, you can find plenty of more advanced mountain biking trails around Australia that will really challenge you.
This is another activity where you’ll want to be mindful of the weather during Summer. Setting out early morning can be a good way to beat the heat or just plan ahead and pick a cooler day.
10. Kayaking
There is no special skill set needed for kayaking, which is part of what makes it so fun – simply head to your local kayaking hut or pick up your own kayak from your nearest store for a great day out.

Race around bumpy terrain and explore some great destinations with unforgettable views. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own quad bike.
