How To Buy a Used 4×4

There are many horror stories surrounding buying used 4x4s which can put some people off buying second-hand. However, buying a used 4WD is a much more cost-effective way of pursuing exciting off-road adventures.

There are inherent reliability issues surrounding older 4×4 models, especially those who have travelled considerable kilometres through rough terrain.

Helping you to debunk ‘buyer beware’, we’re sharing with you the major red flags to be aware of. Aside from the obvious mechanical inspection and service history, which you should receive with any used car purchase. Here are four things you should always check when in the market for used 4x4s.

1. Thoroughly Inspect the Interior

Even if the exterior appears to be in excellent condition, the inside of a 4WD can often experience just as much damage on an off-road trek. Through repeated entering and leaving of the cabin, the interior can become muddy, dirty and damaged. From this, the footwells and carpet can become permanently soiled.

The seals on the doors are particularly vulnerable to the elements, yet often neglected during pre-purchase inspections. Interiors can be replaced, such as the car seats and floor mats, but some areas required complete overhauls. As such, it’s essential you thoroughly assess these before purchase.

2. Check for Rust and Corrosion

All vehicles are bound to experience a little wear and tear in their lifetimes. 4WDs however, are susceptible to more rusting and corrosion than an average, day-to-day car.

Due to the rough terrain and rugged conditions 4WDs go through, it’s easy for there to be paint chips and scrapes, which reveal the bare metal structure underneath. Due to this exposure, used 4x4s are highly prone to rust, something not usually considered by buyers.

Whilst this kind of damage should significantly reduce the price, you may be better off considering a vehicle without any rust at all.

3. Check for Added Extras

One of the joys of owning a 4WD is all the added extras and attachments you can purchase for your vehicle. Many after-market elements can enhance the driving and adventure experience; including racks and cargo barriers to make long trips easier.

With any extras, it’s important to check the legitimacy and installation. While the previous owner may have saved by buying non-genuine accessories, there may be underlying issues. The parts might have been fitted incorrectly, or lack guarantee from the original seller or manufacturer.

Researching aftermarket accessories is essential, so you can quickly identify extras that aren’t part of the original set up, and that may cause you headaches down the track.

4. Take it for a Test Drive

Ideally, you want to know if your off-road vehicle can handle off-road adventures. Despite what the seller claims, it’s crucial to test the form of the car in 4WD conditions. This way you can evaluate how it handles bumps and wet weather conditions. Testing will take co-ordinating with the seller but will be well worth it on your first 4WD adventure.
